1. Let your child read to you. A two year old will often memorize a book and "read it" to you over and over again. Let him.

2. Build on your child's likes. Read the books they like and get books about the toys, subjects and people they like.

3. Explain and show how things work-do this all the time.

4. Ask them to help you so they learn at an early age that they belong and can be of help.
5. Let them fail. Failure is a step to success. It doesn't matter how many times a child falls down as long as she eventually walks, right?

6. Forget about the past. Do not remind your children of misbehavior. But, talk frequently of what they did and do well.

7. Ask open ended questions that have no single answer which encourage your child to think and explore. Questions like....."what do you think the dog will do with that bone?"; "how did you make your block tower so tall?" "How can you tell if someone is older than you?.....younger?"; etc.
